The 1957 and 1958 Packard lineup of automobiles were based on Studebaker models: restyled, rebadged, and given more luxurious interiors. 

Only one Packard model was available for 1957, the Clipper, and it was a Packard in badging only. Beneath those Packard badges was Studebaker's top-of-the-line President dressed in tailfins, unique trim, a different headlight treatment, a supercharger and an upscale interior, among other things. The Clipper was offered in two body styles--a four-door sedan, dubbed the Town Sedan, and a station wagon, the Country Sedan. For longtime Packard customers, this was badge engineering at its worst: A former world-beating brand, renowned for quality and innovation, reduced to some chrome emblems.

1938 Packard 1601 Eight Graber Cabriolet by GLM

1938 Packard 1601 Eight Graber Cabriolet

This is a uniquie one-off Packard. First shown at the Geneva Auto Salon in 1938, this is one of just two or three Packards that were bodied by Graber along with three Duesenbergs.Swiss coachbuilder Graber bodied this American Packard 120 chassis. The car was originally sold and titled in Switzerland.

 

This 1938 Packard, a 127-inch wheelbase “junior” Eight, is among the latter. It was bodied by Graber for the 1938 Geneva Auto Salon, and its body virtually duplicates, albeit to a smaller scale, one built for a Model J Duesenberg, number J-246. The body was ahead of its time, as the lines include sweeping French-inspired pontoon fenders with fully skirted rear wheels and a single tailfin dropping down the rear deck lid. The hood is covered in dozens of small louvers, and beautiful hints of chrome trim appear everywhere.

For many years this car was lost but turned up about twenty years ago in a cinder block garage in Switzerland. Unrestored, it was taken to the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the Pre-War Preservation Class. The paint was tired but all else was intact. I restoration followed with the car returning to Pebble Beach in 2011 to win Best in Class. This was followed in 2012 where it scored 100 points at the CCCA Annual Meeting.

Wonderful GLM model is highly detailed in top quality. Black painting with chrome trim is stunning. A great model, though not a "diecast" metal one.

1941 Packard Clipper and 1954 Packard Patrician

The 1951-1954 Packard Patrician was the automaker's newly named top-line standard sedan in the early '50s. Along with other models, it carried the firm's first complete redesign since the Clipper of a decade earlier. The word “patrician” is Latin for a rulling class in Ancient Rome.

The shape of the Patrician, which designer John Reinhart named "high pockets," didn't wear particularly well, however. There was no criticizing the Patrician's integrity, though -- it was beautifully built, comfortable in the Packard tradition, and surprisingly fast.

Most buyers thought it dull and uninteresting next to the tailfinned Cadillac V-8s and the very roadable Lincolns of these years, and spent their money accordingly.

The Patrician for 1953-54 was premium, four-door sedan, outfitted with high-grade upholstery and  the highest level chrome trimming, including new side trim, hooded chrome headlight bezels and cloisonné hubcap centers. The Patrician, as the senior Packard in the 1954 model year, was equipped with the finest nine main bearing, 359 cubic-inch straight-8 engine, producing 212 horsepower. This was the final year that Packard would use the straight-8.

This  Brooklin Model is, I believe, the first model of the Patrician in any scale, and Brooklin has done it very well, with authentic Matador Maroon paint, an accurate shape and details, and dead-on dimensions. There’s a wealth of carefully fitted chrome-plated parts on this Packard; the new slimmer cormorant mascot is especially well done as the small C-pillar medallion and small chrome tailfins. Only the relief-cast window surround sand tiny rear fender scripts have been painted over.  Big wide white walls and hand-painted red Packard “Hexads” in the wheel covers add to the model’s realistic look. Model has correctly painted the dash in body color, but the silver-painted instrument cluster’s accurate gauge faces and other dash details haven’t been picked out. And while the two- tone upholstery looks quite nice, there are no handles, cranks, or arm rests on the inner door panels. These are small sour notes against a very well played song; Brooklin’s ’54 Patrician is a great addition to any Packard collection.

1941 Packard Clipper 4-Door Sedan by Brooklin

The Packard Clipper is an automobile built by the Packard Motor Car Company in the years 1941-1947 and  represents the best of its age.  The original 1941 Clipper debuted as a single four-door model priced at $1,420. This made it a fairly expensive car, competing with the Cadillac Sixty-One, Lincoln Zephyr and Chrysler New Yorker.
The 1941 Packard Clipper was one of the last cars built by Packard before it shifted to military production for the war effort. The car was available only as a four-door sedan featured a smoothly curved modern body, drawn by noted designer Howard 'Dutch' Darrin. His design molded body and fenders into a dramatic flowing shape that contrasted sharply with the traditional design themes. After the war, Packard resurrected this design for the 1946 and 1947 model years.
 The Clippers were very unique and innovative for their time. Distinctive body shape and design of this Packards  we can recognize in Bentley and Rolls Royce 1956-1961 models.
Brooklin has accurately recreated all these features in a flawless white metal body with smooth and glossy paint.  Packard Clipper is one of the first Brooklins. At the beginning were selected in simple but distinctive shapes. There are only a few plated parts - bumpers, grill, lights and hood ornament., Door handles are only relief-cast. The Maroon  body paint is excellent, but fonts are unreadable.
The interior is very simple, there are no inner door handles or cranks. Both the lines and details match properly from all angles, and dimensions are right on 1:43 scale.  This one’s very accurate in all respects, and it’s a real beauty, easy to find on e-Bay at a bargain price.
